Supermarket sales are likely to maintain healthy momentum over the forecast period. The country’s brighter economic outlook, underpinned by a modernising lifestyle among younger segments of the population, is poised to drive the ongoing shift towards modern grocery formats.
Leading operators such as Co.opMart and WinMart+ are setting their sights on suburban and rural zones, where demand for modern consumer goods is being fuelled by younger generations enjoying better incomes.
In the near to mid-term, supermarkets are also likely to increasingly co-locate with other amenities within large-scale, multi-use complexes. This trend is propelled by the desire of families, particularly those from the Gen Z demographic, to enjoy various entertainment, dining and shopping activities under one roof.

Supermarkets are chained or independent retail outlets with a selling space of between 400 and 2,500 square metres and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Supermarkets may also sell a selection of non-groceries, but the product mix is skewed towards grocery items. Example brands include Casino, Kroger, and Tesco. Exception: In some markets, primarily the US, Australia and Hong Kong, there are grocery retailer brands that operate outlets with a selling space of over 2,500 square metres, but offer only a very limited range of non-grocery merchandise or none at all. These brands are included in Supermarkets.
