PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Laptops to remain stronger performer, while retail volume sales of overall computers will remain under pressure
Retail and business sales of computers in Hong Kong are set to remain under pressure over the forecast period, although demand for laptops via both channels will remain positive, as products enter the final stages of the 5-year replacement cycle (59 months average) for products bought in 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. Volume declines for desktops and tablets are also predicted to be slower compared to the review period average.
Printer sales to continue declining as sustainability concerns increase with a greater shift towards digitalisation
Demand for printers in Hong Kong is expected to continue declining over the forecast period as consumers gradually shift away from printing out documents on paper. The further shift towards digital communication and storage has significantly reduced the need for printed documents, as well as the reduced number of rented office spaces.
Distribution to shift back to online platforms as physical showrooms close
The distribution of computers and peripherals is likely to partially shift back to e-commerce over the forecast period, following a post-pandemic decline during 2021-2023. There are noticeably fewer physical retail stores in the city selling computers and tablets as consumers gravitate towards brands’ flagship stores such as the Mi-Home and Apple outlets.
