Pet care in 2025: The big picture
The rate of growth in retail current value sales of pet care in Ukraine will slow but remain vigorous in 2025. The percentage of households with a dog or cat fell in 2022 due to the Russian invasion, and while it has rebounded during subsequent years, it will remain below its pre-war level in 2025.
2025 key trends
Cat ownership is more common than dog ownership in Ukraine, so it is unsurprising that cat food accounts for the bulk of pet care sales, with wet cat food particularly popular. Cats are smaller than dogs and easier to care for and transport – the latter is an important consideration during a time of war.
Competitive landscape
Local player Kormotekh TOV remained the leading company in pet care in Ukraine during 2024, ahead of Nestlé-Ukraine TOV and Suzirja NVP TOV. Supported by a USAID grant, Kormotech is increasing dry food production capacity in Ukraine and modernising packaging lines and equipment to boost efficiency.
Retail developments
Pet shops and superstores remained the leading distribution channel for pet care in 2025, widening the gap to supermarkets. Within pet shops and superstores, the latter are increasingly cannibalising the former.
What next for pet care?
The rate of growth in retail constant value sales of pet care will continue to slow in 2026 and will be slightly lower across the forecast period as a whole than in the review period. Deepening pet humanisation will continue to drive premiumisation, the ongoing shift from non-prepared to prepared pet food and a rebounding pet population will be the main drivers of growth.
