Even though the obesity level is now declining, driven by government efforts and rising consumer awareness, it is still an issue due to the high prevalence of chronic diseases such as diabetes, and heart disease.
High protein set to maintain growth in health and wellness snacks
In the period 2023-2028, more consumers are expected to turn towards foods that offer fortification or functionality, as these are increasingly seen as options to boost their metabolism and aid general health. High protein, which is considered a type of fortified/functional claim, is therefore expected to see a large incremental gain in snacks over 2023-2028, with retail sales expected to expand by AED45 million to reach AED132 million in 2023 constant value terms.
Vegan will be one to watch as consumers are concerned about health and animal welfare
Vegan products are likely to increase in popularity from an already notable base in the forecast period. In the United Arab Emirates, 13% of respondents to Euromonitor’s Voice of the Consumer Survey, fielded January-February 2024, claimed, “I am vegan”, which was higher than the global average of 5%.
