PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Continued volume decline for sauces, dips and condiments amidst population decrease and competition with ready meals
Japan’s population is projected to continue its decline in the forecast period, which will directly impact sales of sauces, dips, and condiments, leading to a long-term decrease in retail volume sales. According to Euromonitor’s Consumers data, Japan’s total population is expected to drop by 2.
Preference for reduced cooking time and steps, driven by need for time-saving
Due to increasing demand for time-saving cooking solutions, dishes that require fewer steps and a shorter cooking time, such as stir-fries, have become increasingly popular in Japan. In this context, condiments that simplify the cooking process are performing exceptionally well.
Regulation change will hit pickled products hard
In June 2021, an amendment to the Food Sanitation Act required that businesses producing and selling pickles (tsukemono in Japanese) obtain an operating licence. Although a three-year grace period was established for compliance, this period ended in May 2024.
