PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Increasing competition from other channels likely to stifle the growth of direct selling
There is expected to be an improvement in the economic conditions within Belgium over the forecast period in terms of price levels, consumer confidence and pressure on purchasing power. Despite this, direct selling is still projected to see a slight decline in value terms (at constant 2024 prices) over the forecast period.
Blurred lines between direct selling and e-commerce
Traditional direct selling methods, such as home parties, are set to progressively lose relevance over the forecast period. On the contrary, the dividing lines between e-commerce and direct selling are to become increasingly blurred.
Health and wellness trend could still offer growth opportunities for direct selling
Despite a negative outlook for direct selling as a whole, there still remain some opportunities within the different direct selling categories. For instance, the health and wellness trend is set to grow in relevance over the forecast period, with consumer demand expected to become more sophisticated when it comes to functional and healthy nutrition.

Direct Selling
Direct selling is the marketing of consumer goods directly to consumers, generally in their homes or the homes of others, at their workplace, and other places away from permanent retail locations. Direct selling occurs in two primary ways: On a one-to-one basis (usually by prior arrangement a demonstration is given by a direct seller to a customer) or on a party-plan basis (selling through explanation and demonstration of products to a group of prospective customers by a direct seller usually in the home of a host(ess) who invites other persons for this purpose). Avon stands as a prime example of a direct seller using one-to-one selling, whereas Tupperware is famous for its party-plan method. Direct selling of services - such as insurance, telecoms, other utilities, and financial services - are excluded.
