PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Stable outlook as health and beauty will continue to drive direct selling
The ongoing interest in and demand for health and beauty products will continue to help drive sales of direct selling over the forecast period. With Hong Kong’s population continuing to age, the need for health-related products in particular will likely attract older consumers, especially those aged 60 years and above, as they look to enjoy longer, fulfilling lives.
Social commerce to remain popular communication method over the forecast period
Consumers in Hong Kong increasingly value direct conversations with direct sellers to obtain information on specific products as well as receive recommendations. Most consumers contact brands through WhatsApp, and this has become the main channel for communication between merchants and customers.
E-commerce offers direct competition to direct selling
As a direct competitor, e-commerce is predicted to record a much stronger performance than direct selling over the forecast period. Therefore, an increasing number of brands are expanding their online capabilities to provide an integrated ordering and checkout experience, as well as provide same-day delivery services to meet the needs of consumers.

Direct Selling
Direct selling is the marketing of consumer goods directly to consumers, generally in their homes or the homes of others, at their workplace, and other places away from permanent retail locations. Direct selling occurs in two primary ways: On a one-to-one basis (usually by prior arrangement a demonstration is given by a direct seller to a customer) or on a party-plan basis (selling through explanation and demonstration of products to a group of prospective customers by a direct seller usually in the home of a host(ess) who invites other persons for this purpose). Avon stands as a prime example of a direct seller using one-to-one selling, whereas Tupperware is famous for its party-plan method. Direct selling of services - such as insurance, telecoms, other utilities, and financial services - are excluded.
