PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Plant-based dairy set to continue expanding at a rapid pace
Plant-based dairy is expected to post double-digit growth in retail volume and current value sales throughout the forecast period. While this is partly because it is still at a relatively early stage of development, the positive outlook mainly reflects the increasing willingness of Costa Ricans to reduce their intake of traditional dairy products or forgo them entirely for the sake of their health, the environment and animal welfare.
Clean label varieties expected to become more widely available
Fortification with protein should help plant-based dairy products to compete more effectively with dairy-based varieties and increase their appeal among vegans and vegetarians over the forecast period. However, many of these products still contain artificial additives and preservatives to improve their taste and texture, which tends to make consumers more sceptical about the health credentials of the category as a whole.
Increasing price competition should help to broaden consumer base
Because they tend to be comparatively expensive, more affluent Costa Ricans will remain the core target base for plant-based dairy products over the forecast period. However, the category should continue to become more accessible in terms of pricing as distribution of cheaper brands like SoyaPac improves and competition intensifies in tandem with the entry of new players.
