Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
The Colombian economy is predicted to grow by 1.9% in 2024 according to International Monetary Fund (IMF) estimations.
2024 key trends
Despite economic pressures and an increase in the cost of living, Colombia continued to see the development of premium products in 2024. Premium brands like Red Bull and Monster in energy drinks have benefited because of their sponsorship of different events from concerts and music contests to events for the gaming community.
Competitive landscape
Postobón SA and Fomento Económico Mexicano SAB de CV (GBO The Coca-Cola Company) continue to lead soft drinks, fuelled by their strong position in bottled water. In 2024, carbonates saw a decline in off-trade volume terms, with Postobón losing share as a result.
Retailing developments
Soft drinks continue to be distributed mostly through small local grocers, although this channel has been the most affected by the health tax. For small local grocers, sales of soft drinks like carbonates, juice drinks, RTD tea, and energy drinks declined in 2024 as prices rose with consumers either visiting these stores less often or choosing to buy smaller pack sizes.
Foodservice vs retail split
In 2024 retail volume sales of soft drinks achieved positive growth, while sales in the on-trade channel dropped. Amid an adverse economic environment, households still faced restrictions on their disposable income which placed limits on their activities outside the home, including visits to consumer foodservice and other entertainment activities.
What next for soft drinks?
Colombia still faces challenges regarding the political situation in the country, which will likely continue to generate an uncertain macroeconomic environment. The government presented an exaggerated national budget for 2025, without compromising on the reduction of bureaucracy, with it aiming to finance the budget with another tax reform which could negatively impact production activity and consumption.
