Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
Although 2024 was a year of lower inflationary pressure for the Guatemalan economy compared to the previous two years, the inflation rate was still higher than economic growth. According to estimates from the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), GDP was projected to grow by around 3.
2024 key trends
Consumer purchasing behaviour varies greatly in carbonates in Guatemala. In cola carbonates, there is greater consumer brand loyalty, even in inflationary periods, whilst in non-cola carbonates, Guatemalans are more price sensitive and are willing to try emerging brands or switch to other drinks, including flavoured carbonated water and RTD tea.
Competitive landscape
Soft drinks continues to be led by global brands from Coca-Cola de Guatemala SA, which has a broad portfolio of products. Coca-Cola maintains a solid leadership in cola carbonates, aided by a strong national distribution structure, which has also enabled it to leverage a stable position in non-cola carbonates, bottled water, juices, energy drinks and sports drinks.
Retailing developments
In soft drinks, the traditional channel continues to be the most relevant due to its wide coverage. In 2024, it was estimated that the country had around 149,000 grocery retailers, most of them small independent neighbourhood stores.
Foodservice vs retail split
The foodservice industry continued to recover from the impact of the pandemic in 2024 as, despite the rising cost of living, Guatemalans have been eager to resume activities outside of the home and socialise. The Bank of Guatemala (Banguat) projected growth of over 6% for the hotel and restaurant sector, whilst its projection for GDP growth was close to 3%.
What next for soft drinks?
The soft drinks market in Guatemala is expected to continue to evolve towards products with reduced sugar formulations, driven by a general industry strategy, but also by new consumption habits seen mainly amongst younger generations who are more informed about the potential harmful effects of consuming products with a high sugar content. However, flavour will remain one of the main purchasing decisions for soft drinks; therefore, new reduced sugar formulations will need to closely resemble the flavours of the original formulas.
