Thanks to higher than expected GDP growth, sales of soft drinks achieved solid growth in 2024, with above average temperatures also favouring demand for soft drinks over hot drinks. Carbonates and bottled water remain the most popular categories while RTD tea and RTD coffee are nascent.
Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
The economy in Paraguay in 2024 is expected to register steady GDP growth of 4.0%.
Country background
During the last two decades, Paraguay has experienced economic growth thanks to favourable terms of trade that allowed improvements in the prices of the products that the country exports. Also important were solid macroeconomic policies, which include institutional reforms such as the inflation targeting mechanism and legislation of fiscal responsibility.
Socioeconomic trends
The main consumer groups of soft drinks are middle and upper socioeconomic groups who shop in supermarkets, while the lower classes buy soft drinks from small local grocers, depending on which type of outlet is the closest. The largest channel for water is direct selling, the distribution of which is made by large trucks that travel around the city delivering 20 litre bottles of water.
Logistics/infrastructure
The condition of the roads in Paraguay is variable and dependent on the region. The most developed highways connect Asunción, Encarnacion and Ciudad del Este in the southern half of the country.
What next for soft drinks?
Following the positive macroeconomic outlook for the country, the long-term outlook for the soft drinks industry remains strong. The recently elected president Santiago Peña of the centre-right Colorado party assumed in mid-August 2023, with a number of advantages including supportive congress will face an important role in expanding Paraguay’s economy over the forecast period and beyond.
