Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
Cameroon’s inflation rate is expected to remain at approximately 7% by the end of 2024, as reported by the National Institute of Statistics, reflecting the compounded effects of a 15% price adjustment at the pump since 1 February 2024 and subsequent increases in the costs of transportation, foodstuffs, and manufactured goods. Despite these economic pressures, the prices of soft drinks, regulated by the Ministry of Commerce, have largely remained unchanged, as negotiations between the Ministry and the Cameroonian Brewers Association (CAPA) have yet to yield any agreement.
2024 key trends
SABC, Cameroon’s leading brewer, has reversed its reliance on PET packaging, opting to reintroduce returnable glass bottles as part of its corporate responsibility strategy to reduce plastic waste. Historically, SABC utilised glass bottles for its beverages until the market was disrupted by the introduction of 1L PET formats by Source du Pays.
Competitive landscape
The competitive landscape of soft drinks in Cameroon has remained highly dynamic, characterised by significant developments among key players striving to maintain or expand their market share. SABC Cameroon, the market leader, has achieved substantial success.
Retailing developments
Small local grocers continue to account for more than half of volume sales, though supermarkets in particular have gained significant volume share over the review period. The price promotions that supermarkets frequently offer are one factor attracting customers.
Foodservice vs retail split
Retail channels account for over three-quarters of volume sales of soft drinks in Cameroon and the channel continues to grow, partly driven by increased choice, particularly in urban areas, where supermarket chains continue to open outlets. In 2024, retail channels are expected to register healthy volume growth, while foodservice channels are expected to register only muted volume growth, as consumers feel the financial pinch and cut back on eating and drinking in on-trade channels.
What next for soft drinks?
The future of soft drinks in Cameroon is poised to reflect evolving consumer preferences, demographic dynamics, and economic challenges. Growing health consciousness, particularly concerns about sugar intake, is expected to drive demand for healthier alternatives such as bottled water and natural juices, while tempering the growth of carbonates.
