Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
In 2024, Mexico experienced unusually high temperatures in several regions across the country. This is expected to have a positive impact on the off-trade volume consumption of soft drinks over the year overall, especially for out of home consumption occasions.
2024 key trends
It is important to note that this edition of soft drinks includes an adjustment to the Euromonitor definition of sports drinks, opening the category to include electrolyte hydrating beverages. This responds to the competitive environment observed over several years now, whereby electrolyte hydrating beverages are positioned very similarly to sports drinks.
Competitive landscape
Coca-Cola Mexico is expected to remain the leading player in soft drinks in off-trade volume terms in 2024, thanks to its diverse product portfolio and its strong distribution network. Although it faces increasing competition in many categories, the positioning of its brands and the availability of its products across a wide range of distribution channels continues to drive growth.
Retailing developments
Small local grocers is expected to continue to dominate the off-trade volume distribution of soft drinks in Mexico 2024, benefiting from close proximity to consumers in their neighbourhoods. However, fast-growing brands of discounters such as Tiendas 3B and Aurrera have rapidly expanded their geographic reach, penetrating mid-sized and small cities that were once dominated by wholesalers and small local grocers.
Foodservice vs retail split
Both off-trade (retail) and on-trade (foodservice) volume sales of soft drinks are expected to increase in 2024. Although the share of the on-trade channel is expected to increase slightly, it will remain far lower than before the pandemic, in 2019, and this is expected to remain the case even by the end of the forecast period.
What next for soft drinks?
Over the forecast period, soft drinks in Mexico is expected to sustain its positive performance in both off-trade and on-trade volume terms. Extreme weather conditions are likely to persist, which will drive growth during the hotter months.
