Moderate growth of soft drinks in 2025 as demand is dampened by a high level of poverty
Retail volume sales of soft drinks rose in 2025, with the soft drinks market showing a positive, albeit moderate, performance. While the Salvadoran economy was showing stability with controlled inflation levels, it continues to face the challenge of reducing poverty indicators. Reports from the Central Reserve Bank of El Salvador (BCR) in the Multiple Purpose Household Survey (EHPM) indicated that the percentage of people living in some form of poverty was estimated to be close to one-third of the population, while those living in extreme poverty increased by 3.6% compared to the previous year. This context means that, while a large portion of the population regularly consumes soft drinks, with a marked preference for carbonates and bottled water, which represent more than two-thirds of total retail value sales, many consumers remain highly price-sensitive. Climate conditions, on the other hand continue to favour soft drinks across the board, with periods of more intense heat waves awakening Salvadorans' need to prioritise beverages that effectively hydrate and quench thirst, primarily favouring single-serve formats in products such as bottled water and RTD tea. The retail channel remains significantly larger than foodservice, though the latter is benefiting from the dynamism experienced by hotel and restaurants in recent years. The increased levels of public safety experienced in this country as a result of government initiatives has also encouraged local consumers to eat out more regularly, while tourism and hospitality are also growing.
