Soft drinks recorded strong growth in retail volume terms in Uganda in 2024 backed by rapid population growth, urbanisation and relative stability in the economy. While inflation remained elevated in 2024 the prices of soft drinks saw only moderate growth with consumers being price sensitive when it comes to shopping for non-alcoholic drinks.
Soft drinks in 2024: The big picture
Consumers are relatively price sensitive when it comes to shopping for soft drinks and therefore it is hard for players to increase their prices without losing sales. As such, while Uganda continued to experience elevated inflation in 2024 the prices of soft drinks remained relatively sticky, thus supporting volume sales.
Country background
Consumers in Uganda remain price sensitive when it comes to shopping for soft drinks with 47% of the population still living below the poverty line of USD3.65 a day in 2024, albeit this is a small improvement from the start of the review period when the figure stood at 50%.
Socioeconomic trends
The demand for soft drinks is determined by the ability of manufacturers to reach a wide consumer base and by the incomes of the local population.
Logistics/infrastructure
Transportation infrastructure is poor in some regions of the country, with less than a quarter of the country’s road network being paved at the end of the review period. During the rainy season, many roads can thus become impassable.
What next for soft drinks?
Sales of soft drinks are projected to see strong growth in retail volume terms over the forecast period fuelled by factors such as population growth, rising disposable income, urbanisation, and evolving consumer preferences.
