PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Positive outlook envisioned for footwear
Footwear sales are set to rise over the coming years, boosted by a stable economy and a recovery in household spending. With casualwear becoming commonplace in the workplace and remote working still prominent thanks to hybrid systems, casual and comfortable styles of footwear will remain popular in Portugal.
Dynamic competitive landscape will prevail
The footwear competitive landscape is anticipated to maintain highly dynamic with a range of different retailers competing for sales. Specialised multi-branded chains compete against single-branded specialist footwear outlets, fashion players such as Inditex or Mango, and sports goods stores.
Sustainability and innovation: the next steps in the footwear industry
There are two important projects in the Portuguese footwear industry that focus on sustainability and innovation: Bio Shoes 4 All and FAIST. The first one involves around 70 entities from footwear companies spanning universities and associations, among others, and focuses on developing the circular economy and bioeconomy.
