PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Speciality footwear such as outdoor footwear is gaining popularity
In the next five years, footwear in China is expected to see growth across all categories in both retail volume and current value terms. The trajectory of sports footwear, particularly outdoor footwear, is expected to accelerate significantly.
Non-sports footwear set to continue its sluggish performance
During the forecast period, the rising popularity of sports footwear and the continuous consumer demand for comfort are expected to further erode the share of non-sports footwear. Specifically, traditional leather shoes and high heels, which are typically worn for formal business and social occasions, are gradually disappearing from consumers’ wardrobes.
Comfortable casual footwear brands set to maintain growth
Despite the overall underperformance of non-sports footwear, certain casual footwear categories which combine comfort and fashion are still favoured by consumers. For example, Birkenstock, which is often grouped with Crocs and Ugg in the category of “ugly but comfortable shoes”, has seen rapid growth in the Chinese market in recent years.
