Beauty and personal care continued to see retail current value growth in Japan in 2024, with different growth factors observed in the premium and mass segments. Premium beauty and personal care grew due to department stores strengthening their beauty portfolios, and also the entry and category expansion of luxury brands in the Japanese market. In 2024, skin care and colour cosmetics grew thanks to hit hero products and price adjustments by premium brands. Fragrances also grew strongly, supported by the popularity of premium products, the expansion of promotions, and new user acquisition – pushed by active social media communities and celebrity endorsements.
2024 key trends
Skin care remained the largest category within beauty and personal care in Japan in value terms in 2024, and continued its growth path. Rising awareness of self-care amongst consumers particularly boosted sales of special care items such as face masks and anti-agers. Consumers were also increasingly interested in medical treatments such as lasers, peels, needles, and thermo fractional treatments for improving and preventing skin problems. As the habit of regularly undergoing these treatments has spread, skin care products with a similar concept or approach to beauty medical treatments, or items that maintain the effects of such treatments, are emerging in the market. Meanwhile, some consumers are reluctant to use such treatments due to concerns about over-stimulation of the skin. External environmental factors such as climate change, UV rays, blue light, pollen, airborne particles, stress, and irregular lifestyles have made the skin’s barrier more vulnerable, leading to increased attention to dermocosmetics brands, which not only offer low irritation formulations, but also provide solutions to address changes in the external environment.
Competitive landscape
Shiseido was the leading company within beauty and personal care in Japan in value terms in 2024, and saw dynamic sales growth in this year, returning to a double-digit share. The company has a presence across a number of beauty and personal care categories with brands including Elixir, Clé de Peau Beauté, and Maquillage, amongst many others. Despite its strong sales increase, it was players such as Vernal, Dr.LuLuLun, and Guerlain which saw the strongest increases, from a low base.

In 2024, pharmacies remained the leading distribution channel for beauty and personal care products in Japan in value terms, closely followed by health and personal care stores, and both these players saw the strongest share growth in 2024, along with department stores.

Beauty and personal care in Japan is set to see a low positive retail value CAGR at constant 2024 prices over the forecast period. However, with long-term population decline, beauty and personal care in Japan is not projected to return to its 2019 level of sales in the forecast period. Some categories, such as colour cosmetics, are not expected to regain their previous popularity, which will hamper recovery. However, others, such as sun care and fragrances, have seen an increase in users, and have already returned to their 2019 levels of sales. They are also set to continue growing, with fragrances standing out with the highest growth rate. Moreover, the premiumisation trend is set to continue, with a notable increase in the unit prices of products likely to contribute to growth.
