In 2024, beauty and personal care in Argentina continued to experience numerous challenges. The economy was reformed when Javier Milei emerged victorious in the presidential election at the end of 2023. The new government devalued the currency exchange rate, eliminated import barriers, discontinued Precios Justos (a programme offering essential products sold at prices significantly below the market average), reduced public expenditure by finalising public employees’ contracts and reducing the real incomes of pensioners. While these policies are intended to have a positive impact in the medium and long term, 2024 experienced the worst GDP contraction since 2022, the inflation rate was the highest since 1991 and poverty levels continued to increase. Data from the National Institute of Statistics and Census showed that approximately two thirds of 0-14-year-old children were living below the poverty line during the first half of 2024, a double-digit increase on 2023.

During 2024, fewer social outings, such as visits to restaurants, pubs and other recreational places, as well as a decline in employment levels negatively impacted categories like colour cosmetics, depilatories and fragrances. By contrast, products considered essential, such as standard shampoos, bar soap or toothpaste, were less affected. However, loyalty to specific brands and channels diminished as consumers prioritised saving money. Consequently, consumers purchased beauty and personal care products across various channels and chained retailers on different days in order to find cost-effective options.
Competitive landscape
The direct seller Natura Argentina remained the leading company in beauty and personal care, posting retail value share growth in 2024. With the exception of oral care, the company is present in all categories, leading fragrances, skin care and men’s grooming. However, it is important to highlight the challenging environment impacting direct selling. In 2024, Arca Distribuciones, a key player in the channel, declared bankruptcy, while Cosméticos Avon announced the closure of its factory in San Fernando, Buenos Aires Province. Furthermore, The House of Fuller Argentina (GBO Tupperware Brands Corp) discontinued sales in Argentina in 2024, with the company filing for bankruptcy in the US.
Retail developments
Direct selling remained a leading distribution channel within beauty and personal care in 2024. The channel’s strength is driven by the long-established presence of multinational companies like Avon Products (Cosméticos Avon), Natura&Co (Natura Argentina) and Mary Kay (Mary Kay Cosméticos) as well as local enterprises like Matiz and Lady Way.
