COMPETITIVE LANDSCAPE
Bata and Relaxo maintain their leading positions, but see increasing challenges
Bata India Ltd and Relaxo Footwears Ltd continued to lead footwear in India in retail value terms in 2025, with Bata maintaining a share of 5%, while Relaxo held 4%. These companies maintained their lead due to their extensive distribution networks and ability to cater to diverse consumer segments.
Strategic moves and emerging trends create new opportunities
Notable strategic moves were made by brands to boost local manufacturing and comply with regulatory changes in 2025. For example, Asics increased its local production in India from 30% to 40% in 2025 to counter supply chain issues caused by import restrictions and mandatory quality certifications.
Challenger brands reshape the retail landscape with digital-first strategies
The trend of challenger brands vs incumbents significantly influenced the retail landscape in footwear in 2025. Challenger brands gained momentum by adopting digital-first approaches, focusing on direct-to-consumer models, and rapidly expanding their online presence through platforms like Myntra, Flipkart, and Amazon.
