A key driver of demand is likely to be the increasing time New Zealanders spend on digital devices, with widespread smartphone use for work and leisure now a daily norm.
University of Auckland castor oil trial could unlock new opportunities for natural dry-eye therapies in New Zealand
Researchers at the Ocular Surface Laboratory at the University of Auckland are conducting a clinical trial to evaluate cold-pressed castor oil, enhanced with manuka and kanuka oils, as a safe and natural treatment for dry-eye disease, particularly blepharitis, which is a chronic condition responsible for over 80% of dry-eye disease cases. Building on a successful pilot study that showed symptom improvement in 26 patients, the team began recruiting 92 participants for a double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial aimed at generating robust evidence for clinicians in February 2024.
