PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Wine sales may benefit from new grape varieties and organic still wines
After its decline in 2024, wine can restore growth through the development of premium organic still wines championed by INAVI (National Institute of Viticulture). Following a concerted campaign by INAVI, the number of Uruguayan wineries producing and certifying organic wines has risen markedly; by the end of 2024 there were 37 wineries overseeing 210 vineyards certified as sustainable.
Increasing attractiveness of vermouth, still light white and rosé wine
On-trade channels saw vermouth gain penetration at the expense of beer in the review period, led initially by artisanal labels Rooster and Las Flores in bars and restaurants and, from 2023 into 2024, by specialist alcoholic shops and supermarkets. The sector was invigorated in 2024 by Pernod Ricard Uruguay’s entry, which intensified competition between Grupo Cepas Uruguay’s Martini and Gancia and Campari’s Cynar and Cinzano.
Anticipated expansion in fine wines from local and foreign investors
Over the forecast period, continued immigration of high-income Argentineans and other nationals is anticipated to spur further small and medium private initiatives in wine. The past decade has seen high-income foreign investors establish boutique wineries in Uruguay, particularly in Maldonado: Argentine Rodrigo Diz Solari with Sierra Oriental and Peruvian Edmond Borit with Sacromonte, which also offers wine-tasting tours.
