PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Growing demographic diversity to support demand for speciality cheeses
Sales of cheese are projected to increase steadily in both volume and value terms over the forecast period, supported by continued consumer interest in health and wellness. Products positioned as natural, nutritious, and minimally processed will be well placed to capture demand.
Plant-based competition likely to intensify
After a review period marked by persistently high inflation, retail prices are expected to stabilise, removing a key barrier that has slowed the development of plant-based cheese. During the inflationary years, the relatively high price of plant-based alternatives limited their competitiveness against dairy cheese.
Exemption from front-of-pack labelling requirements to sustain demand
From January 2026, new front-of-pack (FOP) nutrition labelling regulations will require packaged foods that exceed set thresholds for saturated fat, sodium, or sugar to display a prominent black-and-white warning symbol. However, many cheese products are exempt from this requirement as they qualify as a source of calcium – defined as containing at least 275 mg per reference amount and serving – which is considered a shortfall nutrient in the Canadian diet.
