Consumer Health in 2025: The big picture
Value sales of consumer health in Brazil rose steadily in 2025 as economic recovery improved consumer finances and raised household spending. With average unemployment sitting at 6.6% in 2024, the lowest rate since 2015, and falling to 5.4% in the third quarter of 2025, consumer optimism and purchasing power has improved, ultimately leading to an upward trend in household spending. Nonetheless, higher inflation driven by rising food prices is still a major concern in Brazil, a key factor leading to more cautious spending behaviour and cutbacks in unnecessary spending. Nevertheless, discretionary categories, such as sports nutrition and vitamins and dietary supplements, are growing faster than the industry average, with OTC products also showing stronger performances, albeit at a slightly lower pace in value terms. Indeed, Brazil is a notable player in consumer health. On a global level, the country has the third largest market for analgesics in 2025, whilst also ranking fourth in sports nutrition, and fifth within digestive remedies and cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies.
Key trends in 2025
Consumer health sales in Brazil are being driven by general improvements in the economic environment and higher levels of health and self-care awareness amongst the country’s ageing population. The social vulnerability of a high percentage of Brazilians is also a key factor as many do not have health insurance cover and need to keep working despite illnesses to make ends meet.
Competitive landscape
Hypera SA was the leading player within consumer health in Brazil during 2025. The company produces well-known brands such as Buscopan, Engov and Benegrip, investing in trade marketing activities to remain top of consumers’ minds. One of the notable examples is the collaboration between Engov and Rede Drogal, a pharmacy network, that adapted its external and internal retail store with the brand’s image during an important rodeo in the state of Sao Paulo. The company also partnered with pharmacies from Grupo DPSP, Venancio, Pague Menos and Araujo to promote the launch of Engov After: Pink Lemonade, in the cities of Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Olinda. Fortaleza and Rio de Janeiro. Hypera has a wide distribution network secured over many years giving its brands a strong presence throughout Brazil.
Channel developments
Pharmacies continued to be the dominant distribution channel for consumer health in 2025. Boosted by the sales of its private label in different categories, as well as the expansion of its product portfolios in hygiene, beauty and consumer appliances, the pharmacy has strengthened its position as the go-to channel for consumers. In many cases, pharmacies are replacing convenience stores due to their wide presence, with different brands competing closely. Despite having restrictions on the sale of their own OTC drugs, private label is expected to continue expanding at a fast pace, with Raia Drogasil being among the most valuable ranges in the country. This trend is gaining investors’ attention due to the strong performance of private label in health and personal care categories, as well as weight-loss drugs.
