Consumer health in 2025: The big picture
Cholera remains a significant public health threat in Angola, particularly in densely populated urban areas. The vast majority of cases (approximately 95%) are concentrated in the adjacent provinces of Luanda, Bengo, and Icolo e Bengo.
Key trends in 2025
The drug regulatory agency in Angola has updated its essential medicines list, removing 52 medications while adding 16 new ones. This revision increases the total number of essential medicines in the country from 423 to 600. Among those withdrawn are important treatments for malaria, tuberculosis, HIV-AIDS, and certain analgesics. Notably, hydroxyurea, used in treating sickle cell anaemia, is among the newly added medications.
Competitive landscape
Portugal’s Medika and Gazcorp have initiated a project to construct and manage an industrial complex in Luanda, with an investment of EUR80 million. This facility will focus on the production of medicines, serums, and medical gases, and is set to commence operations in 2025.
Channel developments
The primary channel for consumer health in Angola is pharmacies, which legally sell over-the-counter (OTC) medications due to regulated sales. Among the strongest product categories are analgesics, digestive remedies, and vitamins. These items are frequently sought after as they are commonly prescribed or recommended to alleviate common ailments.
What next for consumer health?
The implementation of the new system, SIREMA, aims to enhance the regulation and registration of medications. This initiative is expected to significantly reduce the circulation of unregulated pharmaceutical products, thereby curbing price speculation commonly associated with informal pharmacies.
