Consumer health in Bangladesh remains affected by price hikes in 2024. Consumers are shifting to modern conventional medicines in search of perceived fast and effectiveness relief.
Consumer health in Bangladesh has seen very strong price increases, which dampen demand, as low- and middle-income consumers cannot afford the raised costs. As a result, some low-income consumers have turned to traditional treatments.
Traditional medicine is still widely used in Bangladesh, especially Unani and Ayurvedic products. There was state support for traditional medicine even prior to the country's existence.
Cost-of-living rises above the rate of income increases hinder consumer purchasing power and the demand for consumer health products. Although consumers in all socioeconomic groups buy consumer health products, some items are more favoured or affordable only to middle- and high-income consumers.
Consumer health purchases mostly take place in health and beauty specialists, such as traditional drugstores, which offer relatively low prices and are available at every corner. However, wellbeing and nutritional products are popular via e-commerce, as young generations are familiar with the technology and the main consumers of these products.
OTC products must be registered with the Directorate of Drug Administration (DGDA), with this office part of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The DGDA regulates manufacturing, imports and quality control, while also setting prices for medicines.
Vitamins and dietary supplements’ sales, storage and importation incur no specific guidelines from government bodies. Although vitamins’ market size is quite large, the authorities do not show an interest in the development of this category.
Health consciousness is set to continue to rise over the forecast period. However, economic challenges are expected to continue to disrupt the demand for consumer health products.
