Consumer Health in 2025: The big picture
Consumer health in Spain is projected to see strong retail current value sales growth over 2025; only slightly slower than in 2024. While stimulated by inflationary pressure on prices, the demand for many types of consumers health products is on the rise at the end of the review period. Nonetheless, retail current value growth performances vary according to the category. The category with the highest retail value sales, dietary supplements, is seeing fast growth, supported by key health and wellbeing trends, such as preventative health and lifestyle and dietary improvements. Albeit from a lower base, sports nutrition is set to see the highest retail value growth rate over 2025. Health and wellness trends are seeing more consumers partake in regular exercise and sports, growing the awareness of and interest in sports nutrition. Importantly, sports nutrition players are able to reach a wider audience of consumers seeking healthy nutritional and energy options, instead of more traditional customers like sports professionals and dedicated gym-goers.
Key trends in 2025
Spanish consumers are changing their priorities and spending more on travel and going out and less on acquiring goods and possessions. However, health, especially since the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, remains a priority at the end of the review period. In 2025, the high number of health-orientated TikTokers explaining the benefits of supplementation and exercise has supported the performance of certain categories. This is especially the case of for products aimed at gut health and women’s health in vitamins and dietary supplements and herbal/traditional products. This trend is set to grow in importance in the forecast period.
Competitive landscape
Consumer health in Spain continues to be characterised by a large number of categories and players, leading to a highly fragmented competitive landscape. Thus, no company is expected to account for a double-digit retail value share in 2025. Johnson & Johnson SA is set to remain the top player at the end of the review period, benefiting most from its leadership of cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies with the Frenadol brand. However, the company is set to see a marginal drop in retail value share in consumer health over 2025, as it is investing in prescription areas, which are more profitable in the country.
Channel developments
Spanish legislation shapes the distribution landscape of consumer health, which is dominated by pharmacies. Pharma products can only be sold through a pharmacy in Spain. Meanwhile, retail e-commerce sales of pharma products are only allowed if sold by an online pharmacy owned by a licensed pharmacist. However, mass pharmacy chains are prohibited, and the opening of a new pharmacy has to meet set conditions in terms of population density. This results in a very fragmented landscape within pharmacies, with independents accounting a strong share of retail value sales. However, in order to obtain better prices from producers, pharmacies are grouping up. This is the case with Farmacia Ecoceutics. Launched in 2023, Farmacia Ecoceutics is a network of independent pharmacies operating under the same brand. The objective is to offer lower prices on products that are not regulated, and the group is expanding fast in the country. Moreover, in 2025, the French model Mediprix began operating in Spain, with the first of 10 pharmacies. Mediprix is also expected to keep growing its presence in Spain.
What next for Consumer Health?
Over the forecast period, consumer health in Spain is projected to see a healthy retail value (constant 2025 prices) CAGR. As in 2025, sports nutrition and dietary supplements are set to post the highest growth rates. If the socioeconomic framework continues to develop, it is expected that economic indicators will show numbers closer to the ones seen in the early review period, with inflation and interest rates stagnating or declining. This is predicted to support the performance of consumer health through the forecast period. However, the uncertainty surrounding a possible trade war, which began with President Trump’s tariffs, may see Spanish consumers prioritise economy measures and savings. Tariffs would likely affect the types of products, especially analgesics and cough/cold remedies, that can be purchased through the reimbursed system. Nonetheless, rising health awareness and a growing preventive health approach are set to underpin a good performance for consumer health over the forecast period.
