Consumer Health in 2025: The big picture
Consumer health in Egypt continues to show resilience despite the ongoing economic challenges, with consumers prioritising self-care and placing a stronger emphasis on preventative healthcare. Significant growth is reported in key categories including vitamin and dietary supplements, whilst there is an emphasis on supporting bone health, energy, and immunity. Weight management also continues to be a fast-growing segment, underpinned by the increased health consciousness post-pandemic and a wider range of treatment options. Across the board, Egyptian consumers are shifting towards more natural, traditional and herbal remedies, as they seek alternatives to synthetic medications. This trend reflects a broader shift towards holistic wellness, with a preference for products perceived to be safer and more sustainable.
Key trends in 2025
Inflation was a key contributor to value growth in 2025, with price increases resulting in double-digit growth. The weaker performance in volume terms reveals a challenging economic climate beset by lower purchasing power. Egypt has suffered from periods of currency devaluation, creating an uncertain economy and more cautious consumer purchasing power. Lower-priced alternatives and generics have gained popularity as consumers remain price-sensitive. The widespread availability of affordable local brands is supporting the needs of Egypt’s low-income and rural consumers, with many new products emerging to capitalise on rising demand for health care products.
Competitive landscape
Consumer health is an extremely fragmented and highly competitive environment in Egypt. Global GSK Consumer Healthcare holds the overall company top place, being the only name coming close to holding a double-digit NBO share. Meanwhile, over half of all company share is held by unnamed “others”, with the remaining share scattered throughout a long list of those who are named.
Channel developments
Pharmacies continues to be the dominant distribution channel within consumer health in Egypt, holding close to all value share. However, retail e-commerce has also carved itself out a small distribution share, while health and personal care stores and other non-grocery retailers maintain marginal, sub-decimal shares. Regarding e-commerce, the use of online platforms was enhanced during the era of the pandemic, due to necessity. During this time, players developed their own platforms and consumers became accustomed to the convenience and choice which online shopping offers. Therefore, due to this continuing trend, players have adapted an omnichannel approach in the post-pandemic landscape. For example, consumers can buy OTC medicines while grocery shopping from the likes of retailer Carrefour, with a number of pharmacies also developing their own online platforms. Example pharmacies here include Misr, Vezeeta, Tdawi, and Chefaa, to name a few. We are also seeing the rise of third party delivery services in this space, such as Talabat, which delivers products for pharmacies such as Feyak Pharmacy, Lotus Pharmacy, Doctor M Pharmacy, and more.
What next for Consumer Health?
Consumer health in Egypt will continue to be supported by strong baseline demand, as Egypt has a large and growing population. However, price fluctuations will continue to remain a factor affecting sales, as consumers will remain price sensitive due to these fluctuations and overall inflationary pressures. Growth will be fostered by consumer’s seeking to maintain their health and wellness while treating illnesses to reduce symptoms and focus on early recovery. Growth will largely stem from OTC and VDS categories, with sports nutrition and weight management also showing strong performance. The use of new formats like injectables for weight loss could provide a boost to sports nutrition as consumers seek to build muscle, which is a potential side effect of losing weight through injectables. There will be a growing interest in weight loss and wellness products as consumers continue to seek out the best way to lose and manage weight.
