Consumer Health in 2025: The big picture
Consumer health in Tunisia is expected to register healthy current value growth in 2025, though constant value growth is expected to be more muted, as inflation remains an issue, though it is decelerating. It is also a mixed picture, with profit margins tight for products such as analgesics and digestive remedies in particular. After the significant prices increases permitted by the Tunisian Ministry of Health in 2024 for chemically-based consumer health products, it was decided to freeze prices in 2025 and this is impacting analgesics and digestive remedies in particular. However, the cold autumn and winter, which led to a high incidence of coughs and flu, is expected to contribute to the positive performance of consumer health overall in 2025. This extends to cough and cold products, as well as vitamins and dietary supplements.
Key trends in 2025
Shortage of certain global brands continues to be an issue, as price controls impact profitability. However, the local industry is taking advantage of shortages to develop a wider range of domestic offerings.
Competitive landscape
French company UPSA, Laboratoires continues to lead the competitive landscape, followed closely by global giant Sanofi-Aventis Pharma Tunisie. UPSA, which is represented locally by IPS (Industrie Pharmaceutique Said), has a wide portfolio at affordable prices including the analgesic brand Efferalgan, the cough and cold Fervex and the vitamin brand Upsa C. These brands enjoy significant popularity among Tunisian consumers.
Channel developments
Due to the strict regulations imposed by the Tunisian Ministry of Health in consumer health products distribution; pharmacies remain the main distribution channel, particularly for OTC products containing chemicals. However, vitamins and dietary supplements, are also meant to be sold through pharmacy channels.
What next for consumer health?
Consumer health will register positive, though muted constant value growth over the forecast period. In particular, analgesics will register limited value growth, due to price controls, and as analgesics is the most popular consumer health product in terms of value sales, this will dampen value sales overall.
