Threats to remittances reduce spending while higher income demographics increasingly focus on health and wellness choices
In 2025, retail value sales of staples rose. Around a fifth of Honduran households received remittances, mainly from the US, with around USD9,743 million remitted in 2024 to Honduras. Around 75,000 Hondurans were in the US under Temporary Protected Status, although this statute ended on 5 July 2025. The Trump Administration promoted voluntary removal, and in May 2025 a contingent of Hondurans were flown home by the government and given USD1,000 as part of the voluntary removal programme. Given the uncertainty concerning the continuation of remittances, consumption was much more cautious in 2025. Moreover, with consumer budgets stretched and a recession risk on the horizon, consumers increasingly opted for private label products, smaller pack sizes, and substitute products, often choosing lower cost alternatives of products with price promotions. For those seeking indulgences, most people had to save before trying a new product or waited for the product to be discounted. In tandem, growing numbers of higher income demographics chose health and wellness variants opting for high-protein products with gut health in particular becoming more important. Some higher income consumers also moved away from seed oil consumption and avoided processed foods, increasingly looking at ingredient lists. Companies responded to these trends through new product launches with claims focused on increased protein, and natural ingredients.
