Over the forecast period, the performance of beer in Romania will continue to be influenced by the high cost of living, which will continue to affect consumer spending. However, the extended period of warm weather, driven by global warming, is likely to reduce the strong seasonality traditionally associated with beer consumption.
International players will maintain their dominance in the beer market over the forecast period, benefiting from portfolios of strong local and international brands. These players are also involved in the Guarantee-Return System that was officially launched in Romania on 30 November 2023, which is administered by the company RetuRO.
Growth of domestic players is expected to be driven primarily by microbreweries specialising in craft beer. These breweries typically offer a variety of styles, including Pilsner, Weissbier, Ale, Red Ale, and Porter, which attract connoisseurs and beer enthusiasts.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
