PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Economy and mid-priced lager to experience positive growth as premium lager loses traction
Mid-priced lager is projected to experience slight annual growth across the forecast period, whilst consumers are predicted to shift away from premium lager due to ongoing inflationary pressures and high interest rates. The escalating cost of living in Malaysia, brought forth by rising food costs amid global economic uncertainty, has depressed consumer spending, especially among price-sensitive consumers from lower income groups.
Craft beer accelerates the premiumisation trend
Craft beer will continue to meet the rising consumer demand for premium drinks, driven by a desire for unique flavours and high-quality products. Craft beers are usually produced on a much smaller scale, emphasising uniqueness and quality.
Low and non-alcoholic beer expected to see high growth from low base
The low and non-alcoholic beer category experienced positive growth in 2024 and this trend is expected to continue. Young adults in Malaysia are increasingly mindful of their health and wellness, driving demand for low and non-alcoholic beers.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
