PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Potential for non-alcoholic beer expansion despite competition
On the one hand, the health and wellness trend is providing a boost to the development of non-alcoholic beer, as consumers become increasingly concerned about the potentially harmful effects of alcohol consumption. However, on the other, the category’s expansion is being constrained by growing competition from soft drinks, and particularly those with a health orientated positioning, such as sports drinks and energy drinks.
Change ahead in on-trade
The forecast period is expected to see a change in the competitive landscape in the on-trade channel. After a number of complaints, the Swedish Competition Authority conducted an investigation that deemed that the contractual requirements that the leading brewers, Carlsberg and Spendrups, place on their customers are anti-competitive.
Challenges for craft brewers, though government plans offer hope
There is a risk that even more craft breweries will disappear in 2024, according to a survey by the industry association, Sweden's Independent Breweries, SOB. Rampant inflation, with sharply increased prices for raw materials and energy, means major challenges for smaller breweries that already have small financial margins.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
