Despite a general trend towards a healthier lifestyle and reduced alcohol consumption in Switzerland, sales of beer are expected to remain relatively stable in total volume terms over the forecast period, with only a slight decline predicted. Sales of beer are projected to decline in total volume terms in 2025 before stabilising for the remainder of the forecast period.
In Switzerland, it is noticeable that beer in particular in the off-trade is very much dominated by cans in terms of packaging format, and this has even increased in recent years. In the past, cans were associated with lower-quality beer, but then, many premium and craft breweries started using cans to package their beer, thereby breaking old stereotypes.
Switzerland has by far the highest density of breweries in Europe. According to the domestic brewers' association most of these are small breweries with an annual production of less than 20 hectolitres, although this group has continued to grow disproportionately in the last 10 years.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
