PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Economic pressures and rising health consciousness is set to challenge volume sales
Total beer volume sales in Ireland are expected to continue declining over the forecast period, driven by ongoing reductions in alcohol consumption due to government measures, economic pressures, and rising health consciousness. Ireland introduced a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) in February 2024, applying to plastic bottles and aluminium cans, affecting the beer category.
The on-trade is expected to lose sales as smaller, local establishments close
Further closures of pubs and restaurants, particularly smaller, local establishments, are expected over the forecast period, posing a continued challenge for beer sales, as these venues are central to the category. Nonetheless, the on-trade will remain a key part of Ireland’s drinking culture, deeply embedded in social routines and community life, which offers some resilience.
Non-alcoholic beer is expected to be the fastest-growing category
Non-alcoholic beer is set to remain a key area for innovation, with a growing number of competitors entering the market and expanding product variety and availability. Continued marketing investment from major international brands like Guinness 0.

Beer
An alcoholic drink usually brewed from malt, sugar, hops and water and fermented with yeast. Some beers are made by fermenting a cereal, especially barley, and therefore not flavoured by hops. Alcohol content for beer is varied – anything up to and over 14% ABV (alcohol by volume), although 3.5% to 5% is most common. Beer is the aggregation of lager, dark beer, stout and non/low alcohol beer.
