PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Convenience trend will support steady sales
Meals and soups is projected to see stable development over the forecast period, with retail volume sales sustained by a continued strong convenience trend. Sales will benefit from consumers living busier lifestyles and a high degree of product innovation creating a constant stream of novelty value.
Traditional Norwegian options to remain firm favourites
Despite the rising popularity of Asian ready meals, plant-based alternatives and other more exotic options, traditional Norwegian ready meals such as meat balls with potatoes, cod with leek sauce, carrots, and potatoes, chicken breast, fish soup, beef stew, and more, continue to account for the majority of sales. This is unlikely to change going forward as these dishes appeal to consumers across age groups, including single-person households.
Plant-based trend set to rise
The number of plant-based meals and soups options will rise more rapidly during the forecast period, albeit from a low base. Consumers in Norway are becoming increasingly health conscious and willing to at least include one or a few vegan meals per week to reduce their meat intake.

Meals and Soups
This is the aggregation of ready meals, pizza, food kits, prepared salads, and soup. Includes: These are products that have had recipe 'skills' added to them by the manufacturer, resulting in a high degree of readiness, completion and convenience. Food kits is an exception where typically the extent of preparation is much shorter than other meal products; includes meal kits where consumers are to put together pre-portioned ingredients and cook with the guidance of recipe cards. Ready meals are generally accepted to be complete meals that require few or no extra ingredients. However, in the case of shelf stable ready meals, the term also encompasses meal 'centres’; for food kits, they do require a degree of cooking and preparation. As such, some meals may require cooking (ready-to-cook); others may simply need reheating, prior to serving (ready-to-eat). Excludes: Any products sold unpackaged and/or by weight, including food sold from a retail deli counter.
