PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Rising offer of oral rehydration solutions set to increase competition with traditional sports drinks
The strong performance of sports drinks over the review period, combined with the recent proliferation of oral hydration solutions (previously classified as diarrheal remedies), has created a favourable environment for new entrants. Although the significant volume growth recorded by sports drinks in 2021 and 2022 was not repeated in 2023 and 2024, sales levels remain elevated, highlighting opportunities for new brands to enter and address unmet needs not fully covered by leading players such as Gatorade and Powerade.
Future growth of reduced sugar alternatives will be driven by health trends
The 2022 launch of Gatorade Zero in Chilean reduced sugar sports drinks created significant anticipation and excitement, not only because of its association with the renowned Gatorade brand, but also since Powerade traditionally dominated this space. Despite encountering some challenges following its initial launch, Gatorade Zero's introduction has highlighted the growing importance of reduced sugar sports drinks in shaping the future of this dynamic category in the coming years.
Emerging role of sports drinks as a solution to hangovers set to boost online growth alongside alcoholic beverages
The growing association of sports drinks with social events and alcohol consumption is increasingly driving demand for these products through delivery platforms such as Uber Eats and Rappi. Sports drinks are becoming popular as a method for both preventing and relieving the effects of hangovers, with consumers seeking them during and after gatherings where alcohol is consumed.

Sports Drinks
The choice of sports drink usually depends on the provision of fluids, carbohydrates or both. Included into this subsector are isotonic, hypotonic and hypertonic sports drinks. Isotonic are products that replace lost body fluids, electrolytes (sodium, potassium and chlorides) and glucose in similar concentrations to existing body fluid without causing either swelling or shrinkage of cells. These products usually contain about 5-8% carbohydrate and are intended to be consumed during exercise and/or heat exposure. Hypotonic this product is a weaker solution than your body fluid. These drinks contain less carbohydrate and therefore have lower osmolality (fewer dissolved particles than blood). These drinks help the body to speed up water absorption and are best used when you need urgent fluid replacement, as in after exercise. These drinks are not the best for energy replacement. Hypertonic - this drink is a stronger solution than your body fluid. These drinks are designed to replace and maintain energy levels during exercise of at least one hour. They are absorbed slowly and therefore are not appropriate for fluid replacement. Leading brands in off-trade volume include Gatorade, Powerade and Aquarius. This is the aggregated total of regular and reduced sugar Sports Drinks
