PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
RTD coffee faces further decline as consumers shift away from canned convenience
RTD coffee in Japan is projected to experience a continuous decline in off-trade volume sales over the next five years, from 2024 to 2029. Traditionally, the core consumer base for RTD coffee has been middle-aged men, who often purchase “canned coffee” — small metal beverage cans (180-190g) typically found in vending machines.
Functional RTD coffee is underdeveloped in Japan
In Japan, while soft drinks is abundant with functional SKUs, RTD coffee has seen a limited number of products promoting health benefits beyond sugar-free and caffeine-free options. In contrast, RTD tea has been at the forefront of the development of functional products, suggesting that RTD coffee might soon follow suit.
Shift from cans to PET bottles and paper cartons to drive changes
Traditionally, primarily canned RTD coffee was consumed, but in 2022, retail volume sales of PET bottles surpassed those of cans, marking a shift in consumer preference. Since then, the proportion of sales of RTD coffee in PET bottles has been steadily increasing.
