PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Health and wellness trends to support olive oil’s progress
Though some local consumers may find the cost of olive oil prohibitive, the segment is still likely to see some growth in retail and foodservice over the forecast period. Increased attention to nutritional values of ingredients will sustain demand for olive oil, which is further supported by the trans-fat ban for packaged foods.
Shift away from trans fats benefits edible oils, and vegetable and seed oils will remain key category segment
While there is a multitude of edible oils free from trans fats like coconut oil and palm oil, the move away from cooking ingredients with trans fats is likely to bring category-wide growth throughout the forecast period. As players and consumers become more focused on the importance of nutrition, health claims such as ‘cholesterol-free’ and ‘fortified with vitamin A will become more prevalent in edible oils.
E-commerce to keep on rising though offline stores will remain dominant
Supermarkets and small local grocers will remain the key channels for retails sales of edible oils during the forecast period. However, while e-commerce remains niche in comparison, it has been rising steadily since the beginning of the pandemic, and this trend is set to persist.
