PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Olive oil to return to volume growth
Olive oil is expected to see positive volume growth over the forecast period, recovering from the decline in consumption caused by reduced purchasing power at the end of the review period. Extra virgin olive oil, the largest category within the olive oil market and the most affected by high unit prices, will drive this growth.
Mercadona has key role to play in category development
As in other food categories, producers' reliance on their relationships with Mercadona, Spain's largest retail chain, is a key factor in edible oils. After Sovena's olive oils were withdrawn from Mercadona's shelves, a subsidiary of DCOOP became the chain's sole supplier of refined olive oil.
Packaging innovation with an emphasis on sustainability
Producers of edible oils will continue to innovate in packaging, with a focus on sustainability, convenience, and the reduction of food waste. For example, Acesur, in collaboration with AINIA, is developing 100% paper, biodegradable single-dose packaging for olive oil and sauces.
