PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Challenges in palm oil in Cameroon: Deficient local production, import quotas, and affordability pressures
The palm oil sector faces ongoing challenges, including a structural production deficit, government-imposed import quotas, and affordability pressures. With local producers operating at less than 50% of their nominal capacity, industry stakeholders are urging the government to lift import quotas and implement measures to boost domestic palm oil production.
Economy brands of edible oils to thrive amidst a struggling economy
As inflation continues to erode disposable incomes, economy brands of edible oils are anticipated to gain increased prominence over the forecast period, becoming the preferred choice for many price-sensitive consumers. These more affordable options will likely dominate consumer preferences, as spending patterns remain firmly rooted in survival-driven priorities.
Affordability and cultural relevance to drive palm oil growth; Olive oil hampered by high costs
Palm oil is poised for sustained growth in the early forecast years, supported by its affordability, government-led initiatives to enhance production, and its deep cultural significance. However, as the market matures and health-conscious trends gain traction, growth may decelerate towards the latter part of the forecast period as consumers begin to reconsider its high saturated fat content.
