Snacks in 2025: The big picture
Despite the challenging situation in Lebanon, sales of snacks have seen steady growth in 2024 and 2025. This growth has been supported by diaspora remittances and a recovery in tourism and hospitality. Sales of snacks were impacted by the spillover effect from the Israel-Hamas war in 2024 and this had a particularly big impact on tourism with the Lebanese diaspora concerned about returning to the country due to the security situation. However, this has been less of an issue in 2025 with tourism picking up again.
Key trends in 2025
The revival of tourism, particularly in areas like Beirut and the northern mountain regions, has been crucial. The Lebanese diaspora contributes significantly to consumption patterns, as they purchase snacks for home gatherings and celebrations. This demographic is vital for driving growth in savoury snacks in particular, with the Lebanese diaspora typically having deeper pockets meaning they can splurge on non-essentials such as snacks.
Competitive Landscape
Daher Foods’ Master Chips is one of the most important and well-established brands in snacks, with it being active in potato chips and increasingly in nuts, with these being the two most popular categories in snacks in Lebanon. Master Chips has benefited from donor aid and support to develop some of its internal processes, brands and products. It is also one of the longest established players in Lebanon’s snacks market with it having been present in the country for decades. It caters to various price ranges and types of consumers through its various brands of Kettle Chips, Masters Chips and the more recently launched Sitos.
Channel developments
The most popular distribution channel in Lebanon for snacks and groceries in general is supermarkets. Chained supermarkets are investing in expanding and building their businesses within Lebanon with this being led by Spinney’s among others. Carrefour is also a strong player in the market thanks to its main branch located in Hazmiyeh, which is at the intersection of so many different neighbourhoods. But purchasing snacks is also an impulse driven consumer behaviour which makes small local grocers and corner stores/mini markets very appealing for these types of products. These stores are widely accessible across the country and many offer home delivery and telephone orders, adding to their convenience.
What next for snacks?
There should be a continued positive, slow growth in snacks sales because of stabilising market conditions. That said, the market is still reeling from the impact of the compounded social, political and economic crises that Lebanon has been through in the past five years and it will likely take time for the country to see a full recovery.
