Snacks in 2025: The big picture
Sales of snacks are maintaining a positive performance in Mexico in 2025, in both value and volume terms, albeit with growth lower than seen in 2024.
Key trends in 2025
In addition to maintaining attractive price points, leading companies in the Mexican snack industry have placed a strong emphasis on cultural relevance and innovation in flavours to capture consumer attention in an increasingly competitive market. A key strategy has been the localisation of global products, tailoring them to reflect Mexican tastes, traditions, and identities.
Competitive landscape
PepsiCo Inc is the strongest player in snacks in Mexico in GBO terms, with a decent lead on its closest competitor, Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, with Mondelez International Inc being the only other company to hold a double-digit GBO share. In NBO terms, however, competition is tighter and with Sabritas SRL de CV (PepsiCo Inc) in the top place, a little ahead of Grupo Bimbo SAB de CV, and with Comercializadora Pepsico Mexico S de RL de CV (PepsiCo) and Mondelez México S de RL de CV coming in a close third and fourth place. Meanwhile, the overall brand landscape is fragmented, with Gamesa (Pepsico) in the lead.
Channel developments
Small local grocers, or tienditas, remain the key retail channel for snacks in Mexico due to their deep-rooted presence in the daily lives of consumers. These stores are widespread across both urban neighbourhoods and rural communities and are deeply trusted by consumers and embedded in local shopping routines. The proximity and convenience of tienditas make them ideal for quick, small-scale purchases, particularly for impulse buys such as snacks, soft drinks, and confectionery.
What next for snacks?
Snacks will maintain steady sales over the forecast period, albeit at relatively low levels in volume terms, with value stronger. Consumer price-sensitivity will continue, especially in light of high prices (e.g., notably in the costs of cocoa), which will suppress the potential of stronger sales. This shifting landscape will require manufacturers to rethink their strategies, balancing affordability with added value. Manufacturers will continue to utilise shrinkflation and the use of lower-cost ingredient alternatives, but will still have to go further in order to remain relevant. Strengthening the perceived value of products will be increasingly essential, for example by incorporating functional ingredients which offer health benefits, thus aligning with health and wellbeing trends. Ingredients such as chia or quinoa will be more relevant in this context.
