PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Further easing of inflationary pressures and slower value sales growth
While bottled water production incurs fewer input costs than other soft drinks due to minimal processing requirements, it has still faced notable cost increases in energy, labour, and imported raw plastic. These costs have fuelled unit price growth in the category, which has been somewhat tempered by a consumer preference for larger pack sizes, such as multi-packs.
Sustainability considerations likely to increase as economy recovers
Environmental concerns surrounding bottled water production and plastic waste continue to shape consumer preferences, with many choosing brands that prioritise sustainability. While these concerns have taken a back seat amid economic constraints in 2024, they are expected to regain prominence as the economy improves, prompting consumers to seek products with recyclable or biodegradable packaging.
Rise of sugar-free and sober-curious trends presents opportunities
As demand for sugar-free options within soft drinks grows, bottled water brands that offer flavoured, carbonated options are finding favour with consumers who seek low-calorie alternatives to sugary drinks. This trend has fuelled the success of carbonated water brands that market their products in single-serve cans, making them convenient and appealing for on-the-go consumption.
