PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Water quality concerns on the rise, supporting an increase in bottled water consumption
In addition to water being perceived as the healthiest option in soft drinks, health and wellness trends are also inspiring consumers to switch from tap water (whether filtered or not) to bottled water. This is being driven by rising concerns about the quality of tap water in Ireland.
Functional bottled water tipped as an ongoing area to watch
Functional bottled water is tipped as an ongoing area to watch over the forecast period, as the trend for functional products is set to continue and influence further developments over the forecast period. This is being supported by the overarching health and wellness trends, along with the growing range of available products within this area, as brands launch new options to meet consumer demands for drinks which taste good and also offer health benefits.
Deposit Return Scheme and the European Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Directive
Bottled water in Ireland is facing new legislation on the recycling of plastic bottles, namely with the Deposit Return Scheme and the European Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Directive. The Deposit Return Scheme, launched in February 2024, requires consumers to pay a refundable deposit on plastic bottles and cans, aimed at incentivising responsible waste management through financial reward in receiving the deposit back, and improving recycling rates by ensuring a supply of clean and sorted materials.
