PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Water supply disruption ramps-up the demand for bottled water and pressure for eco-friendly packaging solutions to mitigate sustainability issues
Malaysia is often faced with water supply disruptions for reasons like water pollution (odour, oil spills, contamination), technical problems (repair works and valve replacements) and climatic hazards (landslides and dry spells). The frequency and unpredictability of water supply interruptions in Malaysia lead consumers to stock up on bottled water in anticipation of emergencies.
Population growth, a rising number of households, improving consumer purchasing power and tourists to push the consumption of bottled water
Amid an aging population trend, Malaysia’s average household size is decreasing gradually. Besides, Malaysia’s urbanisation rate is rapid.
Foodservice operators to reduce the offer of complimentary drinking water to stimulate bottled water consumption and profit margins
Bottled water in Malaysia is expected to see much faster volume growth in the on-trade rather than the off-trade channel in the forecast period. This is partly because consumers are predicted to be more willing and financially able to justify visits to and the consumption of bottled water in foodservice establishments.
