PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Positive forecast growth driven by ongoing innovation, hot weather and marketing strategies
Several unexpected factors significantly impacted the development of the bottled water landscape in Sweden during the review period. Notably, the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the balance between off-trade and on-trade sales, as lockdowns and restrictions shifted consumer purchasing patterns.
Distribution is dominated by major grocery chains in Sweden
The distribution of bottled water in Sweden remains largely controlled by major grocery chains, a trend expected to persist in the forecast period. Almost all off-trade bottled water sales are anticipated to occur through grocery retailers—primarily the larger, chained players—or through the e-commerce platforms of these same retailers.
Swedes reach for bottled water with added value and benefits
In the later part of the review period, still bottled water accounted for roughly 10% of all bottled water volume sales in Sweden. While tap water in Sweden is of excellent quality and perfectly drinkable, bottled water remains a niche product, typically purchased for health or hygiene reasons—except in rare cases when water distribution issues arise.
