PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Juice set to struggle as Japan’s population shrinks
Off-trade volume sales of juice are projected to continue their decline in Japan over the next five years from 2024 to 2029, largely due to a shrinking population and shifts in demographic patterns. Japan is grappling with a diminishing consumer base, primarily driven by a falling birth rate.
Companies strive to discover the next hit ingredient
Japanese consumers are often described as fickle, particularly when it comes to products purchased for health reasons. Many people tend to absorb information from mass media and social media without conducting their own research, leading to a pattern where trends are typically short-lived.
Health consciousness expected to have differing effects on demand for juice
Consumers in Japan are expected to remain highly health-conscious, and this is expected to have differing effects on demand for juice. On the one hand, a barrier to the growth of juice is that the trend of avoiding sugar intake will remain, which may encourage some consumers to shift to sugar-free beverages such as carbonated bottled water and RTD tea.
