PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
The increase in excise duty on sugary drinks is poised to hike prices of juice
The announcement of a further increase in excise duty on sugary drinks during the tabling of Budget 2025 is expected to hike unit prices of juice in Malaysia, as tax rises are transferred to customers. The excise duty on sugary drinks is set to increase from MYR0.
Reconstituted 100% juice is set to continue to struggle in off-trade volume terms
Reconstituted 100% juice was hit hard by the exit of several significant brands in 2024. The market for 100% fruit juice via the off-trade channel is quite niche, appealing mostly to middle-to-high-income consumers.
The outlook for coconut and other plant waters is optimistic
The forecast for coconut and other plant waters is more optimistic than for other juice categories in off-trade volume growth terms. The more nascent category derives sales from a low base in Malaysia.
